Roots & Shoots: Nature Comes to Infant Community

We are delighted to share with you a project that Nido started and Infant Community is joining: we are creating our own garden! This is not just any garden, but a special space where we will nurture not only plants and vegetables, but also a strong sense of community and a meaningful connection with nature. Working the land and having our own garden within the Infant Community is essential, as it encourages teamwork, respect for the natural environment, and a sense of responsibility—key principles of the Montessori approach.

In Infant Community, we have already started planting seeds, and we are very excited to see some of them beginning to sprout. Soon, we will transplant them into the garden, where the children will be able to observe their growth and take care of them each day. This hands-on experience allows children to build a deep connection with nature and to better understand the cycles of life, growth, and care.

In the classroom, we also integrate nature through practical life activities such as watering plants, cleaning their leaves, and arranging flowers. These activities not only help children develop respect for the environment—by teaching responsibility and patience when caring for living things—but also support the development of coordination, fine motor skills, and concentration. Through this connection with nature, children gain valuable lessons about the importance of caring for and protecting their surroundings, while also strengthening essential physical and cognitive abilities.

This spring, we look forward to sharing the progress of our garden with you and showing you how our plants are growing. The children are very excited to continue this journey, and we hope to share the results with you soon!
