BMS goes to the MMUN

At the end of April, four students from our Upper Primary class and two teachers went to Rome. However, the adventure started several months earlier.

The Montessori Model United Nations is an international project set up to bring together Montessori students across the world and work to create a model United Nations working together for peace. The project is open to students from Upper Primary and Secondary Montessori Schools across the world to awaken the desire in our children to be leaders of the future and feel able to make a change for the better.

We joined the MMUN project because we wanted to show our children that the work they do in the classroom can have an impact outside of it. Every student prepared speeches and posters containing their research and these were shared at the MMUN conference. Our students were representing India and as a result, the whole class was involved in researching about India, including the demographics, history and geopolitical situation. The conference focused on Mental Health and Climate change, and students had to research and present ideas they have on how to improve work on a global level around both areas.

Being away from parents in another country is a big step for the Primary child. Standing up in front of a room of unknown strangers and presenting an idea, in a second or third language is difficult and takes hard work and courage. We are very pleased to report that the students enjoyed the trip and took part in the activities with enthusiasm!

We would like to thank all the teachers who helped this project take place, by attending weekend training courses and giving up their spare time to ensure that the students were prepared and felt successful. We would also like to thank the parents who supported the project and allowed their children to attend.
