Letter from the director

Please allow me to tell you how we came to launch Barcelona Montessori School and a short history of our project so far in order to present a fuller picture of the school we wish to create.

Barcelona Montessori School is the continuity of Nido Montessori Barcelona, a Montessori Center in Barcelona for children aged 0 – 6. Therefore, I think I should begin by addressing the reasons I opened Nido in the first place.

Nido is the result of my passion for the Montessori Pedagogy and the necessity for a nursery for my daughter. When my first daughter was born in 2015, there were no other Montessori Nurseries in Barcelona. At the time I was also looking for employment as an Early Years Educator, having completed my training as a Tecnico Superior de Educacion Infantil. Having visited a number of other options, including public, private and those specialising in alternative pedagogies, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to develop one. English is my partner’s native language and the one which we use at home, and my daughter’s mother tongue. Therefore it seemed logical that any nursery should incorporate English, along with the local languages of Spanish and Catalan. The nursery finally opened its doors at the end of 2015, when we started as a very small project with only 8 children.

Nido’s popularity grew and quickly exceeded expectations. At the end of the last academic year, July 2019 we had over 40 children and, for the first time, had to say goodbye to a “graduating class” who left us to attend different primary schools across Barcelona. A number of families who left us did so with the hope that this September 2020 they would be able to join us again. Together with a number of the current and former parents who have loaned or invested the necessary funds, we hope to make this happen.

When I started Nido, I did so as a man on a mission. It was a risky project but I dedicated my time and energy to it, and it paid off and I have learnt a lot on the way. For Barcelona Montessori School I have teamed up with my partner, Abigail Hatto who is a qualified teacher with 11 years experience and now our curriculum coordinator, to make sure we exceed all the requirements for opening and running a British School. We aim to create a school where children meet and exceed the standards set by the English National Curriculum, yet with constant regard for the Montessori philosophy, in terms of independence, respect and a life-long love of learning.

We are fully aware that this time round the project will be more demanding. Yet we know that we will not be alone and we are in the process of putting together a great team which will be the key to success at this school. Our project is one of innovation, and we aim to develop a school which encourages children to explore all areas of their learning.

We are teaming up with Montessori Football, developed by Ruben Jongkind, in order to promote some of the life skills which team games can offer to young children. We also have our current center accredited with Montessori Center International and the St. Nicholas Foundation, in order to provide placement for their CACHE accredited training programme. We aim to do the same in our new center and develop this relationship even further. Similarly, we have an agreement with the University of Vic in order to accept AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) masters students for 0 – 6 in our current center. We have always strived to reach the high standards of nurseries in the Britain and many of our current policies are based on the recommendations of the NDNA (National Day Nurseries Association).

The school aims to empower children to maximise this potential by encouraging them to actively engage with their education and development; to celebrate and value their differences and aspire to be and do their best at all times. It endeavours to stimulate children’s spiritual and moral growth through a holistic education within which the curriculum plays a significant role in helping us to achieve our aims.

An overview

Barcelona Montessori School is a British Montessori school founded in 2020 and located in the neighbourhood of Sarria, in Barcelona. We are dedicated to providing an authentic Montessori environment for children 14 months to 12 years of age.

At Barcelona Montessori School we pride ourselves in our expertise in Montessori. All our guides are certified by AMI (Association Montessori Internationale). BMS is supported by psychologists and neuroscientists and we strive to foster practices of excellence.

We understand learning as a continuum that should, ideally, last throughout all our lives. During the first years of life, the foundations of a child’s personality and brain are set and our goal is for each child to reach their full potential. To achieve that, we offer two different environments that suit the different developmental needs of children aged 14 Months – 3 years and 3 – 6 years. We believe in self-construction as the fundamental power of the developing child; thus, our environments cultivate diversity in all aspects and offer the child countless opportunities to explore. We want independent, happy children who become adults that make meaningful contributions to the society of tomorrow..

We founded Barcelona Montessori School for our daughters, we want the very best for our children just as you do for yours.

Our Ethos

Barcelona Montessori School aspires to create an environment in which children are supported to become responsible, respectful and resourceful, and develop strong perceptions of themselves, their own capabilities and a sense of accountability. We encourage children to maintain high standards in all aspects of their development. In doing so, these children are better equipped to become happy and contributing members of the wider society who feel a sense of belonging (connection) and significance (meaning) in their social contexts enabling them to collaborate and explore mutually respectful and effective solutions to life’s challenges.

Our staff are from many different backgrounds with different strengths in their particular areas of speciality. They are united in their belief that the Montessori pedagogy offers children the best education that they can receive.

“Whoever touches the life of the child touches the most sensitive point of a whole which has roots in the most distant past and climbs toward the infinite future.” Maria Montessori
